Dadara and Nagara Haveli

The period of Indian history between 18th to 19th centuries is always associated with the British dominion on India but there were other European powers who ruled Indian land. One among these foreign ‘trader' who ruled in this sub continent was Portuguese.

Portuguese ruled the coastal region of the Indian peninsula like Goa, Daman & Dui, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, etc. These all region other than Goa are the Union territories under the Indian Government today but the struggle for their Freedom was longer than Freedom of India from British. So today we are going to analysis and study of one such territory of Portugal occupied India known as Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

In 1783, Portuguese purchased Nagar Haveli and Dadra in 1785. The village of Silvassa was under the territory of Nagar Haveli this whole territory was renamed as Distrito de Damao (Daman district) under the Estado da India (Portuguese State in India).

The above-shown stamp depicts the map of the whole district under the Portugal in India. In 1954 Dadara and Nagara Haveli attend its independence but still remained administrative part of Portugal on International papers.

Finally, in 1961 Silvasa and whole territory came under the Republic of India and on 31 December 1974 the final treaty signed between India and Portugal by which Portugal gave away all its control Dadra and Nagar Haveli declared as the Union Territory.
