Gold Mohur of Jaipur

This Gold Mohur was issued in the name of Queen Victoria in the reign of Maharaja Madho Singh II when Jaipur was a protectorate under the British rule.

Maharaja Madho Singh II was the adopted son of Maharaja Ram Singh. He was the second last maharaja of Jaipur. He supported the supremacy of British rule and even respected their stronghold on India. He also helped Britain in their various military expenditures and was besotted with many titles and privileges.

This coin belongs to Jhar Shahi issues and was minted in Sawai Jaipur. Its obverse features Queen Victoria’s name in Persian and reverse inscribes legend ‘Jhar’ along with the ‘Madho Singh II’. The coin also shows that the Maharajas of Jaipur accepted the protection of the British Raj and later becoming a princely state.

Today on 18th November 1727 the city of Jaipur was established by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Amber which is also known as Jayapura and later named as Jaipur. Vidyadhar Chakravarty of Bengal was the chief architect of this first planned city of Medieval India.

Jaipur State became the British protectorate in 1818. It remained at the side of British even during the revolt of 1857. But on 7th April 1949, the State of Jaipur became the part of Indian Union.
