Bulgaria is one of those countries in Europe with a long and fascinating history. The lev is the currency of Bulgaria. The name of the currency means "lion", and is derived from the Dutch thaler. Though being a part of Soviet Russia, Bulgaria’s banknotes have always been interesting and free from traditional communist imagery.Given above is the 5 Leva banknote of 2009. The banknote depicts Ivan Milev painter, avant-garde stage designer along with his engravings, Painting "Art and the Crown of Thorns", decorative motifs from his other works and passages from his letters, and a monogram from a bill advertising his first exhibition, held in Sofia in 1925.
The reverse of the banknote depicts Fragments from Ivan Milev's paintings "A Woman Harvesting", "TheBulgarian Madonna", and "Wedding of the Dragon” along with the denomination and promissory note.
