Horatio Alger was one of the most famous American authors and perhaps the most socially influential American writer of his generation. His writing was characterized by "rags-to-riches"; that was having a formative effect on the United States during the Gilded Age.

Horatio Alger was the son of Unitarian minister Horatio Alger, Sr. His father teaches him to read at the age of six. Since childhood, Horatio Alger showed his interest in writing. After graduation, he worked as a school teacher and contributed to magazines. In 1857 he enrolled in the Harvard Divinity School, from which he took his degree in 1860.

Horatio Alger published his first book Bertha’s Christmas Vision, followed by nothing to Do a year later, but this book didn't bring him success. He got his first success when he turned his eyesight towards a children's book. His book, Frank's Campaign publish in 1864, brought him great success. This story is about a boy who works to pay the mortgage on his family farm, while his father is off fighting in U.S Civil war.
