Celebrating Agra World UNESCO Heritage Site

Agra is a city situated bank of river Yamuna in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh. Agra is the fourth-most populous city in Uttar Pradesh and 24th in India. It is a major tourist attraction because of many Mughal buildings like the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fathepur Sikri. All these buildings are declared as the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) World Heritage Sites.

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention was established in the year 1972; these are some important places of cultural and natural heritage. There are nearly around 38 World Heritage Sites located in India. These include 30 cultural sites, seven natural sites, and one mixed-criteria site. India has the sixth-largest number of sites in the world.

The Agra Fort has historical places in the history of India. This fort has been the main residence for the emperors of Mughal dynasties until 1638 CE. The last Indian ruler who occupied this fort was the Marathas. Later; it was occupied by the British government. The Agra fort was declared as UNESCO world heritage sites in the year 1983.

This gold mohur was issued by Mughal Emperor Akbar from the mint Dar-ul-Khilafat Agra in the Hijri Year 976. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of Akbar. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the Kalima.
